Chirp can operate successfully beyond 100, 200 or even 300 meters in open space, warehouses or even tunnels. This means Chirp enables real-time ranging and tracking over extreme distances with 1-2 meter accuracy. Since Chirp uses the 2.4 GHz ISM band, it can be used worldwide in any area.

The Inpixon Art of RTLS app allows you to experience RANGING -- the measurement of the distance between two objects -- in real-time, even as the objects move. This ranging demo features Inpixon's unique chirp spread spectrum (CSS) RTLS RF-technology in a simple distance-measurements application.

Why Measure Range? What are the Use Cases?

Since ranging tags can be attached to, or embedded within, objects, people, or vehicles, there are many benefits to two-way ranging. One of the key use cases is collision avoidance, since tags can send alerts if they’re too close to one another. The low cost and ease to create a solution that prevents collisions makes ranging a compelling solution. Since no data needs to be sent to a server, the feedback reaches the user in real-time.

This enables even the most specific safety applications, such as worker protection in industrial facilities and collision avoidance for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-people scenarios. It can even prevent accidents with forklifts, tape-laying systems, shredders, baling presses, and more. Ranging is also useful in creating safety zones or controlling access to certain areas through geofencing.

Good to know: Ranging can also be used to trigger automation. For instance, Object A's proximity to Object B can send a signal to another system to initiate an action.

Usage

The app guides you through the process of connecting the two devices which were mailed or given to you. Once configured, you can measure and view the distance over long ranges (100-300 meters) between two Inpixon Chirp ranging devices and display the results in real-time on your smartphone using this app.

The first device you activate connects to your mobile is called host. It will communicate with the app on your mobile via BLE - keep it close to the phone. The second device you activate is called satellite and conducts the distance measurements with the host using the Chirp.

We recommend starting with a simple line of sight (LoS) outdoor test. However, you can experiment in any environment, as long as metal, concrete or a body of water does not block the radio signal, of course.

For the experiments, we recommend having a colleague who takes the satellite to a point that is known to be 15 or 20 meters away from you holding the mobile and the host. Hold both devices roughly 1.5m or higher above the ground.

For best results, orient the devices upright so you can see the LEDs easily and so the on-board antenna has the same orientation for both devices. Next, extend the range as far as possible. Since radio waves spread out roughly spherically l, it is better to keep the devices higher rather than closer to the ground where the waves may get absorbed.

Note: This app does not require registration nor does it collect any personally identifiable information (PII) or send any data back to Inpixon.
