A Jacob’s Ladder is a classic and exciting electrical science demonstration that shows how electricity, heat, and rising air work together. It is often seen in science museums, physics classrooms, and even in old movies with scientists or laboratories. The device looks simple, but it uses several important scientific principles.

A Jacob’s Ladder has two metal rods that form a tall, narrow “V” shape. The rods start close together at the bottom and slowly spread apart toward the top. At the bottom, a high voltage power supply is connected to the rods. High voltage means there is a very strong electrical force, powerful enough to push electrons through the air.


Normally, air is an insulator, which means electricity does not easily pass through it. However, when the voltage is strong enough, it can ionize the air. Ionization means the air molecules lose electrons and turn into plasma, a hot, glowing state of matter that conducts electricity. This creates a bright electric arc, or spark, that jumps across the small gap between the rods.


Once the arc appears, something interesting happens: the spark begins to rise upward. Why? Because the plasma is extremely hot. Hot air rises due to convection, the same reason smoke or steam rises. As the plasma rises, it pulls the electric arc with it.


While the arc moves up, the rods get farther apart because of the V shape. As long as the gap is small enough, the electricity can still jump across it. But when it reaches a point where the gap is too wide, the arc breaks and disappears.


Then the process starts again! Since the bottom gap is the closest, the voltage creates a new spark there, and another arc begins to climb. This cycle repeats over and over, making the arc look like it is climbing a ladder—which is how the device got its name.
