⚫ Where is India's first High Court?
The Charter of High Court of Calcutta was ordered in May 1862 and that of Madras and Bombay were order in June 1862. Thereby, making the Calcutta High Court the first High Court of the country. The reason for the implementation of this act was the need for a separate judiciary body for different states.

⚫ Can I find out about a court case?
The Case Tracker allows users to search for information on applications or appeals in the Court of Appeal, Civil Division. Users are also able to search for information on applications or appeals heard in the last 31 days.

⚫ There is no automatic right to have an appeal heard by the High Court and parties who wish to appeal must persuade the Court in a preliminary hearing that there are special reasons to cause the appeal to be heard. Decisions of the High Court on appeals are final.

⚫ How does a court case work?
During the trial, lawyers present evidence through witnesses who testify about what they saw or know. After all the evidence is presented, the lawyers give their closing arguments. Finally, the jury decides if the defendant is guilty or not guilty. The jury must find the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

⚫ What happens when a judge makes a wrong decision?
An error of law is the strongest type of ground for appeal because the appellate court reviewing the case does not have to give any weight to what the trial court judge did. The appellate court will look at the law that was supposed to be applied and decide whether or not the trial court judge made a mistake.

⚫ How powerful is a high court judge?
High Courts have the power of judicial review. They have the power to declare any law or ordinance unconstitutional if it is found to be against the Indian Constitution. A High Court alone can certify the cases fit for appeal before the Supreme Court.

⚫ Why court cases take so long?
From getting an FIR registered to going to a lower court which takes its own time to decide cases and maybe even the High Court or Supreme Court in case of dissatisfaction, means a case can take years to decide. Add to this the huge number of vacancies existing in the Courts, and the situation gets truly distressing.

⚫ What happens if you don't attend court?
If you won't go to court, you may get a 'witness summons' from the court. A witness summons says you have to go to court. If you still fail to go to court without a good reason, you could be 'in contempt of court' and you may be arrested.

⚫ How do I find someone's court records?
There are three ways to look at court records: Go to the courthouse and ask to look at paper records. Go to the courthouse and look at electronic court records. If your court offers it, look at electronic records over the internet.

⚫ Can I withdraw a police statement?
How to change or withdraw your statement. Tell the police officer in charge of the case as soon as possible. The police will probably want you to give evidence in court to help settle the case.
