About Lok
We founded Lok in Menlo Park, the heart of Silicon Valley. Our neighbors include many social media titans of industry, and it is our close proximity to them that opened our eyes to an acute need that is currently going unaddressed in the way we communicate in the 21st century: the need to get back to basics and communicate securely without the burden of unwanted ads, news feeds, or updates from people we don’t know.

We wanted to find a way to leverage the power of social media, not let social media leverage us as users. This means having real discussions with people we actually know in a safe place, without the prying eyes of a big brother platform monitoring us or forcing our eyes onto advertisements.

In other words, our goal is not to connect the world with thin superficial strands; it is to strengthen the bonds we all have with the people that matter most to us.

Our team thinks it’s time to opt-out of these networks that sell our data to the highest bidder, and instead opt-in to a new platform that is purpose-built for nurturing our relationships.


Why Lok?
There have been countless breaking news articles in the past few years related to data breaches. These cases were top of mind for our founding team because we were abhorred by A) the scale of personal data stolen and B) how the companies used the data for their own profit by sharing with other entities.

We were tired of companies using our data for their gain and then carelessly selling (or worse, losing) it. So, we did something about the situation. We built our platform on the basis of tight security and privacy, designed to communicate only with people that we care about most in our inner circles.
The bottom line is that we should be able to share our lives online freely without having firms scan and analyze our every keystroke or photo. We should be able to have full control over our data and how it’s used. We should use social media as a product, not be used as the product.
