Anne Blythe (was Shirley) was an orphan adopted by Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, the daughter of Walter and Bertha Shirley, a bosom companion of Diana Barry, a colleague and finally the wife of Gilbert Blythe, and the mother of Joyce, Jem, Walter, Nan, Bi, Shirley, and Rilla Blythe.
After a childhood spent in homes and orphanages of strangers, Anne is sent to live with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, both siblings in their fifties and sixties. Originally, Marilla and Matthew had decided to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew run their farm at Green Gables, in the fictional city of Avonlea (based on Cavendish, Prince Edward Island). Instead the orphanage mistakenly sends Anne.
The book recounts Anne 's struggles and joys to settle down at Green Gables. Anne takes a lot of pleasure in life and adapts easily, succeeding in a small farming village. Her imagination and talkativeness will soon brighten up the Green Gables.
