His mother was Umm al-Khair Salma bint Shakhr bin Amir bin Ka'ab bin Sa'ad bin Taim. Means his father and mother came from the Bani Taim tribe. His father was given kuniyah (nickname) Abu Quhafah. During the ignorance of Abu Bakr ash-Shiddiq ra. called Atiq. Imam Tabari mentioned from the path of Ibn Luhai'ah that the children of Abu Quhafah were three people, first Atiq (Abu Bakr), second Mu'taq and third Utaiq.
