Kuwa Smart App is a treatment literacy App meant for young people between the ages of 15-24 years who are living with HIV. “Kuwa” is the Swahili word for to be. The idea behind this name is to enlighten the users of the App by providing crucial information that will assist them adhere to their medication. HIV is a chronic condition that is managed by Antiretroviral drugs. In order to achieve viral suppression, people living with HIV need to take their drugs not only on a daily basis, but at specific times during the day.
The youth are required to attend monthly treatment literacy sessions/support groups so as to be informed on the importance of taking their drugs as prescribed as well as the consequences of not doing so. Majority of the youth are either studying (secondary/tertiary institutions) or are unemployed. Due to this fact, they cannot attend all the treatment literacy sessions as required due to financial constrains.
