The song "Indonesia Raya" became one of the nadir points of the birth of the national movement throughout the archipelago in the early 20th century. Behind its lyrics, it contains a vision of the idea of one Indonesia, instead of being divided into several states.
The creation of the song Indonesia Raya by W.R. Soepratman began when he came across an article in Timboel magazine published by Solo about the challenges for Indonesian composers who could compose the national anthem.
Feeling challenged, WR. Soepratman finally tried to compose the song Indonesia Raya by composing the notes and lyrics using the violin in 1924.
Then the premiere of this song was held on the closing night of the II Pemoeda Congress, October 28, 1928, in Batavia (Jakarta). WR. Soepratman played instrumentally in front of all congress participants.
Over time, the song gained massive popularity within the national movement. In fact, at every congress of political parties, the Indonesia Raya anthem is always sung. So since then it has become a milestone in the history of the song Indonesia Raya being sung in public.
With the help of a German technician, the two songs were then recorded at Yo Kim Tjan's residence, located on Jalan Gunung Sahari, Batavia. Master LP record at 78 RPM version of the original WR sound. Soepratman was kept carefully by Yo Kim Tjan. Meanwhile, the recording of the keroncong version was sent to England for reproduction.
