Kim Taehyung was born in Seo District, Daegu, South Korea on December 30, 1995 and grew up in Geochang City. He is the eldest of three children, has two siblings, a younger brother and a younger sister. He first wanted to become a professional singer when he started elementary school and in junior high school he even took saxophone lessons to make his dream come true. V officially became a Big Hit Entertainment trainee after successfully passing an audition in Daegu.

After graduating from Korean Arts High School in 2014, V continued his education at Global Cyber University. V has a baritone type voice. Karen Ruffini of Elite Daily said in her article "V ... has no problem producing low notes which are very relaxing and a key element in the overall sound for BTS. Tamar Herman of Billboard said that "with a wide range and deep tones, vocals are expressive V is the mainstay voice for BTS.
