How to manage time - by prioritizing new and old commitments
How can I set the time? Most people feel frustrated about managing their limited time source. Required work schedules overwhelm the activities and relationships in our personal lives, making it difficult to focus on the things that matter most.
People get pressured by doing too much without thinking about committing to new things in relation to the current schedule. Not having a time budget is like spending more money than you earn.
Usually excessive spenders do this without realizing it which leads to borrowing credit cards and more anxiety. Some easy techniques will help keep you from feeling the same time.
The next time you want to make a commitment, ask enough questions to find out what activity it was, when it happened and how much time it took. Also explain if you are committed to something permanent or if there is a specific expiration date such as a two-year period.
Consider all emails, phone calls, meetings, and responsibilities. Summarize the total time taken including the exact time that may lead to conflict. Always add extra time to the unknown because even with the best planning, you never know how much time it will take until you actually start doing it.
How to manage time
Good time managers know that things always take longer than you think. The total time might surprise you after adding 25% to 50% to the unknown. High-value liabilities can take a long time.
Start prioritizing new commitments by matching them to your current schedule and asking the following questions. Is it suitable? Would you be thin in other areas? Do you have to reduce the other important roles? What is the value of this new role in your life?
Most people don't have a large, unfilled hiatus in their schedule and something is likely to happen. If you choose to do something new, the best time management advice is to let go of something else.
These questions will help you decide what needs to be sacrificed. Is there anything worthless anymore? Are other commitments about to expire? Is it no longer in line with your core values?
Also, calculate the current time commitment that you submit and compare it to the new estimated commitment time to see if you need to allocate more time.
Time management is as simple as fully understanding the time spent for new commitments and finding something to give up in the process. You will not spend much of your time or stress.
