To calm your thoughts and relax your body are two goals of meditation. But where do you begin if you are new to meditation? Everyone must start somewhere, it's true, but certain forms of meditation are simpler to learn than others. Here are some pointers for beginning meditators.
1. Let go of your obsession with "doing it right"
There is no one "right" approach to meditate; almost every meditation session is unique. Therefore, if you're unsure of whether you're doing everything correctly the first time or not, don't start to panic. In actuality, it's much better to unwind and just let your thoughts wander. Your meditation session will run more smoothly as a result. Simply tell your conscious mind to leave for a while while you unwind if it starts to bug and question you.
2. Try a few various techniques
One of the simplest techniques to begin breathing meditation is considered by many people. You already breathe, thus the main goal of a breathing meditation is to simply become aware of and control your breathing without pushing any breaths. Others think that beginning with a walking meditation is a good idea. Your eyes will be open for this type of meditation, of course! Since walking meditation is essentially just taking a stroll while paying attention to your surroundings, you may already be engaging in it without realizing it. Another method that many first-time meditators use is guided meditations. All you have to do is relax and listen to someone else's voice, either in person or through an MP3 of previously recorded meditation. You'll be led through the relaxation process and the entire meditation process.
3. Schedule regular meditation sessions.
Making a habit of meditation takes time, just like any other habit. When you first begin to practice meditation, schedule a regular time for it. Ten or fifteen minutes will do just fine; it doesn't have to last long. But adding meditation to your daily practice on a regular basis would be really beneficial. Schedule some time in your calendar to spend some quality time with yourself if you're organized. Alternately, you might forgo viewing the news on TV and meditate instead, which will also lessen the amount of negativity you are exposed to on a regular basis.
For those new to meditation, the most crucial thing is to start! Later on, you can modify, switch up your meditation techniques, and so forth. However, you can only do that if you have genuinely begun to meditate.
