Mertelu Village is located on the north side of Gunungkidul, in Kapanewon Gedangsari to be precise. Mertelu Tourism Village carries the concept of Green Village tourism which offers natural hills and forests that are still beautiful. From here, you can enjoy views of the city of Yogyakarta and Klaten from above. The location of the village which is at an altitude makes the air cool and fresh.
Motivated by the development of tourism in the southern area of Gunungkidul, which is dominated by beach and cave tourism, the people of Mertelu Village formed a Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) to become a tourist destination. Self-help communities form tourism villages with the hope of increasing tourist visits to the northern region of Gunungkidul and then influencing the improvement of the community's economy.
One of the tourist attractions of Mertelu Village is the artificial flying fox tour which is claimed to be the longest in Indonesia and the second longest in Southeast Asia. Tourists can slide with a 625 m long flying fox with speeds reaching 80 km/hour. The sensation of gliding above the height with beautiful natural scenery can be enjoyed by tourists. The security standards used already use international standards. When visiting Mertelu Village, you can shop for batik as souvenirs at the same time.
Many local villagers work as batik makers and produce beautiful written and stamped batik products. The typical motif of Gedangsari Batik is the walang motif. In addition, the community is also very concerned about tradition and culture so that it remains sustainable and becomes one of the cultural tourist attractions.
