Many of you are already familiar with our journey at High Roosebeck Farm. For those who are not, here’s a little insight.
We are first generation farmers at High Roosebeck Farm, located on the Coast Road between Ulverston and Barrow. We took on the tenancy of the farm in September of 2020. We started with increasing our dairy herd to around 80 commercial black and whites. At the time the dairy market was extremely volatile with the after effects of Covid, this lead us to the decision to diversify into selling our produce direct to the consumer, using a self serve vending machine. After a lot of planning and hard work we installed our vending machine in the summer of 2022.
Around this time we also increased our dairy herd to include 50 pure jerseys to maximise our milk contract and make the milk we sell in the vending machine even tastier and creamier than it already was.
We pasteurise (heat treat) all our milk but do not homogenise it so you still get the nutritional value but without any risk.
In 2023 we increased the produce available in The Milk Hut to include our own farm fresh eggs, meat and our own home made cakes. Cakes are available to pre order and available in the Hut on a Friday, Saturday and ,Sunday.
Then in late 2024 we had notification that out milk buyer was going to be bought out by dairy giant Muller, and they told us they would be be charging us a fee for selling our own milk at the hut. This has lead us to the decision to increase our processing facility and offer a traditional milk round, where we milk the cows, pasteurise, separate and bottle our milk all on the farm, by ourselves.
The distance from the cow to the bottle is 20 ft which makes our products the most sustainable, environmentally friendly dairy products in the area. Our milk will only be delivered in glass bottles which will be returned and washed at the farm.
