MUAC stands for Middle Upper Arm Circumference. The MUAC value is often used as a way to detect malnutrition in young children. MUAC is used as a screening tool, so it is a relatively crude measurement, but the main goal is to assess the severity of malnutrition, such as mild or severe. There are many styles of MUAC armbands, but most of them are essentially a flexible ruler that wraps around the arm. These bands often have colored segments (green, yellow, red) that indicate the severity.
