Vaishali is a district in the Tirhut division of Bihar province. Vaishali became a separate district on 12 October 1962, separated from Muzaffarpur. The headquarters of Vaishali district is at Hajipur. Vajjika and Hindi are the main languages here. According to historical evidence, the first republic of the world i.e. "Republic" was established in Vaishali itself. Vaishali district is a sacred city for the religion of Jainism due to the birthplace of Lord Mahavira. Lord Buddha came to this earth three times. In the sixteen Mahajanapadas during the time of Lord Buddha, Vaishali's place was as important as that of Magadha. Apart from being of historical importance, today this district is also known for many national level institutions and production of bananas, mangoes and litchi.
There is a famous Baraila lake which is spread over 263 acres. According to the 2011 census, the population here is 34,95,201 and its area is 2036 kilometer.
