A series of events throughout the 19th century culminated with the election of the canton of Aserrí, sixth in the province of San José, on November 27, 1882.
On November 4, 1825, Aserrí acquired the title of town and became part of the district of San José, when the State was divided into the Eastern and Western departments. In 1841, Aserrí became part of the Alajuelita neighborhood.
On November 4, 1862, when the canton of Desamparados was created, Aserrí was separated from San José and became the third district of the new Canton. It is appropriate to mention that, since Desamparados is a population of recent origin (18th century), Curridabat absorbed Aserrí, which was a population of greater antiquity. This caused disagreements, therefore, Curridabat was annexed to San José in 1871 and Aserrí separated in 1882 when it became a canton.
The decree by which the canton is created dictates: “Article 1 0 The District of Aserrí is established as Canton and the title of Villa is granted to the town of the same name, which will be the head.”
On August 10, 1920, the Villa de Aserrí was granted the title of City through the decree promulgated on that date.
