Learn negotiation strategies - negotiation strategy versus tactics

strategy
A strategy is a large, complete picture, a plan that includes the goal or desired outcome. In the military, strategy is to use, either during peace and war, or to use all the power of a nation, through large-scale long-term planning and development, to ensure security or victory. Another definition is a plan, method, or series of maneuvers, or strategies to achieve a specific goal or result. A well-known strategy employed by the Allies in World War II was the bombing strategy in Europe. The strategic bombing doctrine of the Army Air Force is based on the theory that a grenade launcher can hit the enemy until his industrial base is destroyed and with it his ability and will to fight. While this example helps illustrate the concept of strategy,

Strategic negotiation is simply the process of designing and implementing a well-thought-out plan to achieve the results you want. Often times, you plan to convince the other party to give you what you want and want. The first thing you should determine when developing a negotiation strategy is what do you really want? What is the purpose of negotiation? Are you looking to buy a home or commercial building? Do you want a bonus? Do you want to solve a problem that is currently before the court? Once you know what you want and devise a strategy, you can implement tactics that will help you achieve the results you want.

When someone develops a strategy, it is often easier to break planning down into stages. Here's a simple template used with both martial arts and warfare you'll see fit for negotiations as well:
1. Determine your strategic goals
2. Intelligence gathering
3. The environmental plan
4. Participation program

Tactics
Tactics are simply the means by which you implement your strategy. In military tactics related to the actual use and deployment of forces in combat, and more specifically, it is considered a military science concerned with securing objectives defined by strategy, especially the technique of deploying and directing forces, ships and aircraft in effective maneuvers against the enemy. In our example above with the Army Air Force, the narrow formations that bombers used to make best use of the heavy arsenal of bombers and prevent German fighters from selecting and mobilizing a single aircraft are examples of the tactics used to help implement the strategy. Another tactic is to use bombing at high altitudes when low-level bombing proves susceptible to anti-aircraft fire.

One must be very careful not to focus on activities, means, or tactics at the expense of achieving the desired goal or outcome. Above all, achieving one's goals in negotiations should be paramount. Of course, the tactics, activities or means we use should always be appropriate and ethical, but we must remember that they are only means to achieve the desired results. Examples of negotiation styles include things like:
1. Give a warning
2. Biting
3. Shocked or surprised
4. Good cop / bad cop
5. Go

There are many tactics people use when negotiating. There is nothing wrong with using specific tactics to implement your strategy and achieve your goals. Using negotiation tactics is not necessarily unethical, deceptive, or unethical, although some people may want you to believe this. Yes, some tactics may be unethical, and as I mentioned above we must always be careful and ethical, but there's nothing wrong with competing.

No, I haven't forgotten the principled negotiation strategy taught by Fisher and Urey in Getting to Yes. However, I also realized that sometimes we might be in competitive negotiations, and knowing the different tactics can give us an advantage. As a lawyer, I realize that some clients hire an attorney to be their bull, and while a win for everyone may be ideal, some of these clients are only interested in winning their column. In practice, we attorneys must meet the needs of our clients if we are to continue working. In other areas of business, you will also test competitive bargaining, and knowledge of tactics can be very beneficial. Additionally, knowing the different tactics of negotiation and counterattack prepares us when others use them against us.
