Halloween is a festival of Druidic origin, celebrated between dusk on October 31st and November 1st, marking the beginning of winter and the New Year. During this period, the Celts postponed their daily work, and the laws of nature were suspended. Humans could visit the world of the dead, and the deceased could roam the earth, demons manifested, and fairies fluttered about. Food was placed on the doorsteps of homes to offer to evil spirits; this is perhaps the origin of the "trick-or-treating" of Halloween, the children's custom of going from house to house asking for candy.

Halloween has survived to this day as the festival of pumpkins, a typical autumn fruit, trick-or-treating, and black cats and witches, terrifying and ominous beings who for one night shed their terrifying aura to become part of fun parties around the world.
