The word "summa" means a sign. It is said to have been called because of the many signs of supplication in Samat's prayer.

The prayer of Samat is a prayer of Imam Baqir (as) which is recommended in the last hours of Friday. According to a narration by Imam Muhammad Baqir (as) the supreme divine name is mentioned in this prayer. Shia scholars have written many accounts of this prayer.

There is a hadith from Imam Baqir (as) which said: If I swear I pray in the prayers of Samat, I have said the divine name.
