Acute Encephalitic Syndrome (AES) is a manifestation of a group of diseases of various etiologies leading to a significant number of morbidity and mortality. Because of the urgency and rapid irreversible condition, early oxygenation and prompt referral are the guiding principles in management of such AES cases to save lives.
In UP, the state government has taken significant system strengthening measures to ensure early case referrals to Encephalitis Treatment Centers for prompt and appropriate management of the AES cases. These centers are at the Primary Health Centers, Community Health Centers and District Hospitals of the 18 high burden districts of the state and have significantly reduced the time taken for initiation of appropriate treatment leading to significantly lower deaths and decongestion of the tertiary care centers.
With REACH UP the critical parameters for assessing the preparedness of the ETCs for dealing with AES cases are tracked daily, the key indicators for analysis of disease profiles are available for prompt decision making and evidence-based actions are taken.
