Deep under the surface of the dead Earth, the last refuge of people, the City, seethes with life. The union of engineering genius and the efforts of all mankind, a giant structure of steel, concrete and biopolymers, it keeps the remnants of civilization one step away from complete extinction.
Josiah Kaviani, a young mathematician and statistician, begins his journey in an underground labyrinth of cramped streets. He is talented and smart, but he has a terrible enemy - unbearable loneliness.
But soon Josiah will have a meeting that will turn his whole life and ideas about the world in which he lives upside down. A meeting with someone - or perhaps something that is hidden in such depths, where even the cyclopean City cannot reach. Something so secret that the very knowledge of it can be deadly. Something monstrous.
