Karim Mustapha Benzema (born December 19, 1987) is a French footballer who plays in the offensive center with Real Madrid in the Spanish League and France. He has been described as a "very talented striker", "strong" and "effective striker inside the penalty area".
Benzema was born in Lyon and started his football career with local club Bron Terraillon. In 1996, he joined Olympique Lyon, and later graduated through the club's youth academy. Benzema made his professional debut in the 2004--05 season and appeared sporadically in his first three seasons as Lyon won three league titles in that period. In the 2007-08 season, Benzema became a key player and achieved a remarkable year as he scored over 30 goals and Lyon won their seventh league title in a row. For his performance, he was named the best player by the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) in the French League and was named to the Union team of the year. Benzema was also the league's top scorer, and Italy's Goren Sportivo gave him the Bravo award. After another season in Lyon, in July 2009, Benzema transferred to Real Madrid for a transfer fee of more than 35 million euros ($ 50 million), and signed a six-year contract.
After struggling to prove himself in his first season with Real Madrid, in the next two seasons, Benzema reached the climax, scoring 32 goals en route to help the club win the Copa del Rey in 2011 and La Liga in the 2011--12 season. He won the Champions League four times, all with Real Madrid: in 2014 and three times in a row from 2016 to 2018. He won the Best French Player award three times, in 2011, 2012 and 2014.
Benzema is a former international player in the youth ranks of the French national team and has represented his country from the under-17 teams onwards.
