The Civil Code is a code of civil law promulgated by Act No. 471 of the Republic of Korea (February 22, 1958) and came into effect on January 1, 1960.
The current Korean Civil Code consists of general provisions, real rights, bonds, relatives, inheritance, and supplementary provisions. This is in accordance with the classification system of the German Civil Code (BGB) and is distinct from the Roman law classification system, which divides the civil code into persons, objects, and property rights. The Civil Code of the Republic of Korea is largely divided into property law (real rights, bonds) and family law (relatives, inheritance), and the General Provisions of Civil Law have a general nature that applies to both fields, but there are many limitations in their application to family law.
