NU and Muhammadiyah are the two largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia, maybe even the world, which was founded by two figures who studied in the same person. K.H. Hasyim Asy'ari founded Nu while K.H. Achmad Dahlan founded Muhammadiyah. Both of them were born before Indonesian Independence, and even the leading figures played a role in the republic's independence efforts.
