BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is a measure established by physicians and health experts to establish weight status of an indivitual. i.e underweight, overwight or within a healthy weight limit.

Adolphe Quetelet born 1796 was the first person to come up with BMI. He was a Belgian astronomer, mathematician, statistician and sociologist.

BMI is also reffered to as Quetelet index. The formula for BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.
