India ranks 2nd in the number of oral cancer cases and contributes to almost 1/3rd of the total burden globally. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) dominates all the oral cancer cases with potentially malignant disorders, which is also recognized as a detectable pre-clinical phase of oral cancer. There are many predisposing intrinsic (genetics, hereditary, etc) factors and extrinsic (chemicals, betel quid chewing, radiation, infections, trauma, nutrition, etc) factors, which may influence the development of cancer. Tobacco and alcohol play a major role! Approximately 90% of oral cancers are linked to smoking. Early detection is key! When detected early, oral cancers can have a recovery rate of 90 to 100%. Unfortunately, delayed diagnoses significantly impact survival rates. Oral cancers diagnosed late have a 5-year survival rate of less than 63%. Mortality associated with oral cancer can be significantly prevented through regular screening, early detection, and treatment.

CAN-ID app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze answers to a simple screening questionnaire to serve as an assessment of the oral cavity and determine the risk of the individual for developing oral cancer and to detect potentially malignant lesions. The CAN-ID app is user-friendly and can be used by individuals at home for self-screening or by healthcare professionals as an adjunct to traditional screening methods.
