On January 30, 1920, the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic adopted a decision on the preparation of the national anthem of the Republic, and for this purpose, a competition was announced by the Ministry of Public Education. However, the fall of the People's Republic on April 28, 1920 did not allow the adoption of the national anthem of Azerbaijan.
On May 27, 1992, the parliament adopted the Law "On the National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan". According to the law, in 1919 "Azerbaijan March" composed by genius composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli and poet Ahmet Javad was approved as the National Anthem of Azerbaijan.
