The first groundbreaking initiative for elderly allowances in the country was undertaken in the 1997–98 fiscal year through the *Old Age Allowance* program. Allowances for 5.801 million elderly beneficiaries in the country are now being delivered to their doorsteps in a short time without hassle through the G2P (Government-to-Person) method.

To alleviate the plight of widows and destitute women oppressed by their husbands, the *Widow and Husband-Deserted Women’s Allowance* was introduced in 1998. In addition, the government adopted allowance and education stipend programs for persons with disabilities. Efforts are being made to bring all marginalized communities into the mainstream of development. Accordingly, programs have been taken to transform hijra, bede (river gypsies), and other disadvantaged communities into skilled human resources through allowances, stipends, and training.

To provide financial assistance for medical expenses to patients and their families suffering from cancer, kidney disease, liver cirrhosis, stroke-induced paralysis, congenital heart disease, and thalassemia, and to restore patients to a healthy and normal life, the successfully implemented program has been making positive contributions to building a healthy society and improving social indicators.

Under the *Tea Workers’ Livelihood Improvement Program*, in the 2022–23 fiscal year, 60,000 tea workers were granted BDT 5,000 each through the G2P system. In addition, through the Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council, 75 housing units were provided in the 2020–21 fiscal year.

To discourage people from engaging in the degrading profession of begging, the government has undertaken a program titled *Rehabilitation and Alternative Employment for Beggars*. For this purpose, 16 tin-shed buildings are being constructed within 5 existing shelters. Of these, 8 have already been completed, while construction of the remaining 8 is progressing rapidly.
