MAVEN launched in November 2013 as part of NASA’s scout program. In Earth orbit, it deployed its solar panels and fired its engines to put it on a Mars transfer trajectory. MAVEN took ten months to journey to Mars, entering Mars orbit in September 2014, over the Martian North pole. MAVEN deployed its antennas and equipment once in Mars orbit ready to begin scientific studies.
This included deploying the Langmuir probe and waves instrument, the articulated payload platform, and the solar wind electron analyser.
The mission priority was to discover why the significant climate change, which caused almost all the loss of Mars’ atmosphere, occurred. MAVEN revealed why Mars has such little atmosphere: because the absence of magnetic field had allowed solar winds and radiation to strip away its atmosphere. It was also able to deduce how quickly gases had escaped Mars’ atmosphere in the past. Eight years on, MAVEN still operates in Mars orbit in 2022.
