The evil wizard Grantelbart has stolen knowledge from the world of Litera and left nothing but white spots! The player should now follow the reading path and challenge Grantelbart to a reading duel. In addition, he should collect knowledge on the way and bring it to Litera.

Litera is a classic adventure game with a world map. Explanations of new rules and playful exercises to consolidate these rules alternate level by level. Every correctly solved task is rewarded with praise and knowledge balls with which small pictures on the world map can be unlocked. On the way over the reading path, the player gradually reveals the letter lock and finally reaches Grantelbart's castle, where he challenges it to the long-awaited reading duel.
The player is accompanied by a young witch with red hair, whose name he does not learn. She tirelessly explains reading rules, reads letters and guides the player step by step along the reading path.

Litera first explains general reading rules, such as the difference between uppercase and lowercase letters and the sounding of letters together, then the difference between self-sounding and sounding and later common letter combinations and less commonly used reading rules. An interactive and complete overview with examples of how a letter is read can be called up in Litera at any time.

The learning order in Litera is chosen so that with just a few learned letters and after a few minutes in the game, a few simple everyday words can be read and written. The choice of words to be read and written is based on the learning objective for the first and second class of Findefix by Oldenbourg Verlag. Litera contains over 400 lovingly illustrated words and 4 illustrated short stories.

All exercises are designed so that the level of difficulty increases slowly. First the new letter must be recognized and announced, then the player reads individual words with the new letter. Only then should the player write himself: he has already seen and correctly read every word that the player is supposed to write. The cube exercise serves as a transition between reading and writing. The word length is already specified here and there are only four letters to choose from at any point in the word.

Learn frustration freely
Every learning process is accompanied by mistakes and it is important to be able to freely try out when something is considered “right” or “wrong”. This constant feedback is necessary, but it should not demotivate.
The exercises in Litera are designed so that negative feedback is rarely necessary. For example, the player should find a letter that is depicted on a side of the cube. When turning the cube, the letters shown are read out. Only when the correct letter points forward does the player get positive feedback. In the writing exercise, incorrectly typed letters are marked in red. In this way, misspelled words also look wrong and do not memorize themselves as “right”. The player is never blamed or punished for making a mistake.

Constantly looking up
What you have learned can be repeated and looked up in Litera at any time. The world map and the letter lock are used for this. All levels that have already been completed can be seen on the world map and can be repeated. The letter lock is a sound table specially developed for Litera. Here you can see all the letters and letter combinations that have already been learned. The letters can be read aloud and examples of each reading of the letters can be displayed. You can also jump from here to the corresponding level on the world map. The sample pictures in the initial table have been selected so that they represent all the important sounds of the letters.
