Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world, and its burden is increasing. According to the World Health Organization, the world crossed a new threshold in 2021, when an estimated 20 million people were diagnosed with cancer, and 10 million people died of it.
Speaking from Geneva, WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris said cancer care reflects inequality in the world.
She added: "The clearest form of discrimination - in this regard - is between high-income and low-income countries, and according to reports, universal treatment is available in more than 90 percent of high-income countries, but it is available in less than 15 percent in countries low income."
closing the care gap
That is why the theme for this year's World Cancer Day (which falls on February 4 of each year) is “Closing the Care Gap” – the efforts of the World Health Organization focus on breast cancer, cervical cancer, and childhood cancer, and its initiatives target low- and middle-income countries, for greater public health gains.
In a joint statement, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, and the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, low and middle income countries are disproportionately affected in terms of cancer incidence and related deaths.
By 2040, 70 percent of deaths are expected to occur in low- and middle-income countries.
According to the two organizations, recommended interventions to prevent cancer and other noncommunicable diseases have not been adequately implemented, and treatment remains unavailable in many parts of the world.
Globally, an estimated half of people with cancer may require radiotherapy as part of their care, yet many countries do not have a single radiotherapy machine.
This sharp disparity is particularly pronounced in Africa, where about 70 percent of countries report that radiotherapy is generally not available to the population.
Facing the burden of cancer
According to the joint statement, addressing the burden of cancer requires an evidence-based, multisectoral, multidisciplinary approach based on universal health coverage for effective cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care.
Palliative care is a treatment to relieve symptoms caused by cancer and improve the quality of life for patients and their families, and it can help people live more comfortably.
The Public Health Assembly urged all countries to base their national response on a comprehensive strategy to guide cancer prevention and control activities.
