Surat Maryam, the nineteenth surah in the Qur’an, and it is one of the Meccan surahs, except for verses 58 and 71, which are civil. The number of its verses is 98, and there is a prostration in verse 58, and it is located in the sixteenth part. It was revealed after Surat Fatir. And the surah was named after the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, to be the only surah in the Qur’an that was named after a woman.

The surah begins with the story of Zakaria when he called God a secret supplication, i.e. from the heart, to make him a guardian or a successor, so God responded to him and granted him Yahya. Then he speaks to him, God willing, to say and confirm that his mother Mary is the most honorable woman on earth, and then addresses the people and mentions to them that God commanded him to pray, give alms and honor his mother. After that he mentions the story of Abraham with his father and how he used to call his father to stop worshiping idols, then he mentions the prophets whom God blessed them with and how he succeeded after them who forgot prayer and followed their desires. And almost at the end of the surah, he denounced how those who polytheists and those who disbelieve said that God took a son, stressing that he should not do this, because everyone in the heavens and the earth are servants of the Most Merciful.

Reasons for the revelation of Surat Maryam
It was mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari that one of the reasons for the revelation of Surat Maryam was the delay of the Angel Gabriel from his revelation to the Prophet Muhammad, when his companions asked him about the story of the Companions of the Cave and Dhul-Qarnayn. That was a great hardship for him, and when Gabriel finally came down with the revelation, the Prophet Muhammad said to him: “You slowed me down until I thought badly, and I miss you.” Gabriel replied to him: “I was longing for you, but I am a commanded servant. From Surat Maryam: And we do not descend except by the command of your Lord. To Him belongs what is before us and what is behind us and what is between that and what is hidden.

There is also a reason for the revelation of verse 66: And a person says, “When I die, I will be brought out alive.”
