Surat Yusuf is a Meccan surah, characterized by mentioning the complete story of the Prophet of God Yusuf, peace be upon him, in a wonderful narrative style, and it is the longest story in the Qur’an in one context. Mecca to Medina, its twelfth order among the surahs of the Qur’an after Surat Hud and before Surat Al-Ra’d, and its number of verses is one hundred and eleven.

Surah name
The only name for this surah is Surat Yusuf, and the reason for its name is apparent because it mentioned the entire story of Joseph, peace be upon him, and did not mention his story elsewhere. His name was not mentioned in others except in Surat Al-An’am and Surat Ghafer, and Ibn Ashour said: The story of a prophet was not mentioned in the Qur’an as much as the story of Yusuf, peace be upon him, was mentioned in this Surah.

place of descent
“Surat Yusuf” is Meccan unanimously, all of it, and it was said that the three verses of the first of them are civil. Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti said in “Al-Itqan”: He is weak and does not pay attention to him.

Several effects were reported in that Surah Yusuf is Makiya on the authority of Abdullah bin Abbas, Abdullah bin Al-Zubayr, Ikrimah, the freed slave of Ibn Abbas, Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Qatada bin Daama, Al-Zuhri, and Ali bin Abi Talha.

The order of its descent
It was revealed after Surat Hud and before Surat Al-Hijr, and it differed in its arrangement, so the fifty-second was said, which is the saying of Al-Zuhri, and it was said the fifty-third, and Ibn Ashour attributed this saying to the public.

The reason for its descent
On the authority of Saad bin Abi Waqqas, in the saying of God: He said: “God revealed the Qur’an to the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, and he recited it to them for a time, and they said: O Messenger of God, if you told us! Then God, Blessed and Exalted be He, revealed: “These are the verses of the Clear Book” to His saying: Then the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, recited it for a while, and they said: O Messenger of God, if you had told us! Then God, the Most High, revealed: “God has revealed the best of hadiths in books that are similar to them.” The verse, all of these are commanded by the Qur’an.

Narrated by Ishaq bin Rahwayh, Ibn Mardawayh, Abu Ya’la, Al-Bazzar, Ibn Hibban, and Ibn Jarir al-Tabari in his “interpretation,” and al-Hakim said: The chain of transmission is authentic, and Ali al-Dhahabi remained silent. It was improved by Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani, and Muqbil Al-Wadi’i graded it authentic.
