The Seduction of Tavernick, the protagonist of this novel, is an exceptional character in several respects.
The author, Edward Phillips Oppenheim, excelled in describing a mentally autistic personality nearly forty years before describing this condition in medical references. Tavernik, the protagonist of the novel, is a completely unemotional person who is unable to empathize with or understand most ordinary social situations. He is industrious, hard working, meticulous to the extreme, very careful in his pursuit of wealth, but at the same time unaware of the feelings of those around him.

Tavernick meets Beatrice Bernay - a poor American girl living in London - and rescues her from extreme poverty and her suicide attempt, and in return she teaches him a lot about human feelings. In the midst of that, he accidentally meets her sister, Elizabeth, that wonderfully beautiful girl, who does not hesitate to sacrifice anything and everything for the sake of money, and in that she stands on the opposite side of Beatrice. Will the benefit of “Beatrice” or the benefit of “Elizabeth” prevail? And which of them will win the heart of “Tavernik” in the end? Edward Phillips Oppenheim: an English writer famous for his suspense novels.
He was born on the twenty-second of October 1866. During World War I he worked in the Ministry of Information while continuing to write his novels. During his lifetime, he wrote more than 116 novels, mostly about suspense and international intrigue, but this number also included romances and comedies. Oppenheim is one of the first to write novels about spies and espionage as we know it today.
