Pediatric IV Fluid Calculator (Ped FC)

When a child is ill and needs to treated in a hospital, usually parenteral fluids must be started. Often everything goes fine, but what if there occurs problems with e.g. electrolyte balance you did not expect? Or what if the child has fluid restriction but at the same time is hyponatremic and hypoglycemic - what fluids would you consider?

Ped FC is a new and practical simulation application for the design of parenteral fluid contents. Changing the relative rates of the most common fluids but at the same time keeping the decided total fluid volume fixed is possible! You’ll quickly learn what parenteral fluids actually contain and how they could be best used in your hospital.

Think about the challenges you have had with fluid therapy! What if you need more electrolytes or more glucose but your patient is on fluid restriction, what do you do? Or if you don't achieve the desired outcome with the fluids in use, how would you change them? And also how does using tighter Dextrose (glucose) concentrations enable more fluid volume for other possible infusions!

You can outline different scenarios for yourself. Ped FC gives you the concentrations of different fluids and you will find new possible ways to solve your scenarios. And at the same time learn to use fluids in a whole new and interesting way!

Virtually all of the most common fluid therapy problems are possible to address in the Ped FC. You can visualize how the content of infused fluid (fluids) vary and what would be the optimally tailored fluid therapy for that particular child at that moment.

The fluids contained in the application are:
Dextrose 5-10-20-30-50%
Plasma-Lyte 148 in 5% Glucose
0.9% Sodium Chloride in 5% Glucose
Ringer’s Lactate
Plasma-Lyte 148
0.9% Sodium Chloride
3% Sodium Chloride (513 mmol/L)
Potassium Phosphate (400 mmol/L)
Vaminolact
20% Parenteral Fat Emulsion

NOTE that Sodium chloride 3% (513 mmol/L) and Potassium phosphate (0.4 mmoL/mL = 400 mmol/L) are non-commercial fluids which should be reserved for use only in intensive care unit through a central venous line. Also note that the simulator does not take into account safety rules related to glucose or potassium concentrations in the peripheral vein or total daily fluid volume. Ped FC is not a medical device, so you can consider the calculator as a simulation tool.
