The idea behind the "Valentina" app is precisely this: to combat smartphone distraction for motorists and pedestrians.

Valentina is an application for the protection of pedestrians and we have named her in memory of Valentina Cucchi, a young woman from Turin who tragically lost her life due to an accident: she was hit while crossing the road by a totally distracted driver.
Our App aims to prevent other terrible accidents from happening that not only distort the life of the pedestrian's family, but also of the driver himself.

The app interacts with the sensors on board the smartphone to determine whether the user (driver or pedestrian) is within geographical areas evaluated by Valentina as "dangerous pedestrian crossings / crossings". After selecting one of the two categories, the app monitors the user's phone activities in the background. When the phone is in the vicinity of a dangerous crossing, the app enters reasoning phase, generating notifications on the screen to inform the driver and pedestrian of the impending pedestrian crossing.

The generation of notifications takes place in an area of ​​about 100 meters for the pedestrian and in one of about 200 meters for the driver.

The list of crossings without dangerous traffic lights reported by Valentina is constantly updated, but at present it is possible to use this app in the Italian cities of Turin, Milan, Bologna and Rome, cities in which many crossings have been selected and mapped without traffic lights deemed dangerous. The app, if active, will show and monitor only the dangerous crossings closest to the user within a radius of 1000 meters around it, constantly updating as it moves.
