THE STORY
What starts as a boring school excursion becomes an unforgettable adventure when Coyote, the Ohlone animal god, interrupts Alfi on his 5th grade field trip, guiding him through the layered history of the land. This interactive, cinematic experience uses humor, music, and dynamic visuals to transform how you see the Presidio National Park and San Francisco’s cultural history.
THE EXPERIENCE
As you walk through the Presidio’s picturesque Tunnel Tops Park, explore three-dimensional recreations of traditional dwellings, witness creation stories at the scale of the San Francisco Bay, and discover the deep natural and cultural history of this sacred land.
PERFECT FOR
Families with children ages 6 and up, local explorers, and tourists seeking unique educational experiences in San Francisco. This outdoor adventure engages kids with history through storytelling and exploration.
BACKGROUND
This site-specific app takes you and your family beyond iconic views and deep into the story of the land beneath your feet. Instead of dragging your family through a museum, this experience takes them out into the world to experience San Francisco’s unique history and culture first hand. The project was developed over five years through collaborations with Indigenous storytellers, writers, and educators. Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities’ “Digital Projects for the Public” program.
HOW IT WORKS
Before you go, download the app and plan your trip. Inside the app you’ll find a map of the walk and suggestions for other family-friendly activities nearby. Then, make your way to the Presidio Tunnel Tops Park in San Francisco and open the app to launch the experience. GPS-triggered audio and AR visuals will guide you. Headphones are recommended for full immersion. Devices can be connected for a communal experience using Group mode. Once downloaded, the experience can be done as many times as you’d like. Bring layers! It can get cold out by the Golden Gate Bridge.
FROM THE CREATORS
“This is a different kind of immersive experience than most people have had. Like a movie, there is a story and characters you are following, but the park itself becomes a character in the narrative, from its views to its history to its people." - Michael Epstein, Writer and Director
“Petlenuc Interrupted is not just straight history. It's looking at stories that I’d been told growing up, our traditional stories, leaning into humor and adventure, which is how the best Indigenous stories work." Carlee Malemut, Writer (Athabaskan tribe member)
