The Geopark Villuercas-Ibores-Jara is a mountain range located in the southeast of the province of Caceres, between the basins of the Tagus and Guadiana. Its highest point is the "Risco de La Villuerca" (1,601 m), and from its summit offers a magnificent view of the mountain ranges, valleys, frogs and Guadalupe, with the Royal Monastery.
Geopark was declared to become part of the European and Global Network of Geoparks of UNESCO.
Geoparks are natural areas that conserves a unique geological heritage, a typical landscape and places where rocks, minerals or fossils can tell us the history of the Earth. Also promote research, conservation, education and the social and economic development.
The set is the result of erosion for millions of years on a macroplegamiento and then rejuvenated by movements of ascent fractures and large blocks. Failures can be seen in the various hills, finding phenomena as the mirror fails or the folds that accompanied the fracture. The river network has configured the landscape, which is known as "Appalachian relief" by analogy with the Appalachian Mountains of North America.
