The world forest in the Kranzberger Forest near Freising is a forest area that is unique in Bavaria. Foresters from the Bavarian State Forests have been planting numerous tree species from all regions of the world that thrive in our latitudes on an area of more than 200 hectares since 1980.
You can walk through the forest on well-signposted paths and special themed trails and discover the diversity of the vegetation zones. There are information points and guided tours to find out more about the different tree species and their ecological requirements.
In addition to botanical education, the world forest is a leisure and recreational area for the entire family with meadows and water, playgrounds and art exhibitions.
The free Weltwald app for Android smartphones and Apple iPhones supports the exploration of this arboretum and leisure area in the Kranzberger Forest.
Features of the app
The app includes a map view with geodata available offline in the form of a basemap and various feature layers for the global forest topic. Orient yourself in the area using your GPS position and use the network of paths to find the planting plots and recreational facilities that interest you. The search function allows you to enter German species names or Latin species of the tree species you are looking for with autocompletion in the input field. The planting plots found are selected on the map and positioned using auto-zoom. Tapping on the information points for the planting plots opens a pop-up window with detailed information, in which a link to external websites with further information on the respective type of tree can also be used.
The functionality of the mobile app largely corresponds to the interactive arboretum map on the homepage of the World Forest website. The map symbolism used is explained in a legend.
