Are there universal rules when a word is masculine, feminine or neutral? Unfortunately only very few. If you really want to be sure if a noun is used with the one or the other, you need to memorize the genus.
So with every new word you should not only learn what it is called, but also what genus it has.
But there are a few rules already. And you should know that!
There are certain word endings (suffixes) that can show which genus has a word. For example, nouns with -ment, -tum or -chen in the end are mostly neutral (the drug, the date, the girl).
If a word ends in -ig, -ling, -ich or -en, the word is very often masculine (for example: the vinegar, the refugee, the carpet, the garden).
Suffixes that are found almost exclusively in feminine nouns are: -in, -ung, -ion, -keit, -heit, -schaft, or -ei (see: the girlfriend, the ending, the supervision, the friendliness, the impudence , the friendship, the bakery).
