The Law of the Russian Federation "On the Mass Media" dated December 27, 1991 No. 2124-1 (Law on the Mass Media) is a normative legal act regulating relations between participants in the production of mass media in Russia: between society and the media; the state and the media; founder, publisher and editorial office of the media; editorial board and author; the editorial board, author and "actors" of the publication; editorial office, author and source of information; Media and citizens of the Russian Federation and others.

The law prohibits censorship and creates legal opportunities for the establishment and registration of newspapers, magazines, television and radio programs, and news agencies that are independent of the state and political parties.
