History and Heritage: Cambil is an ancient defensive settlement of Islamic origin that developed between the Egeño and Achuelo hills. Its old town has been declared a Historic Site for its architecture of whitewashed houses in a mountainous setting and winding layout. Its heritage includes the castles of Cambil and Alhabar, two strategic border fortresses during the Reconquista, as well as the 14th-century Mata Bejid Castle above Sierra Mágina.
