With the “Guía de Chucena” Application, developed by the Hon. City Hall of Chucena, it is intended to create a new channel of information to always have it at hand, and it is a fast channel of communication between citizens and this Administration. In addition, it facilitates mobility around the municipality and information thanks to the geolocation on the map.
Chucena is located in the flat lands of the Condado de Huelva, known as the Campiña, some 62 kilometers away from the capital. A small municipal term, only 25.77 square kilometers, with a population that can be around two thousand residents. Etymologically, its name would derive from “succius”, fertile in Latin and “ena” suffix of possession and its origin is dated between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC.
The origin of Chucena was closely related to the ancient settlements of Tejada la Vieja and Tejada la Nueva, located in the municipality of Escacena del Campo. The first was, from the beginning of the first millennium until its disappearance, in the middle of the fourth century BC. C., an important commercial and metallurgical center of Tartessian and Phoenician culture.
Later, there was a change of specialization towards agricultural activities in Tejada la Nueva, known in Roman texts as Ituci, and located in a fertile countryside.
Chucena's progress has been slow since the Middle Ages, due to the depopulation of Tejada.
The conquest of Tejada took place in 1253, under the reign of the Castilian King Alfonso X. Initially, Chucena was part of the Seville City Council as a royal land.
There are some Municipal Archives of great amplitude, value and that facilitate knowing the history of this town and of the Marquesado from the mid-16th century to the present. These archives can be completed with those of the House of Medinaceli, which date back to the mid-13th century in the case of Chucena, and collect history from the beginning of the Christian conquest. Also about Chucena, unlike many other towns, there are two books of a historical nature and that today are a must-read: Historical Notes of the town of Chucena (1958), by Father Jacinto, and Historical Study of the Marquisate of Alcalá de la Alameda (1975), by Martin Sanchez Franco.
The history of Chucena is closely linked to that of Alcalá de la Alameda. an old nucleus, with similar and contemporary historical origin, located half a kilometer from the first, and that today is uninhabited and with a practically disappeared farmhouse. However, this small town gave its name, perhaps because it had a more popular toponymy, to an important Marquesado since the 16th century, with stately jurisdiction in this town and in Chucena.
In 1833, Chucena became dependent on the province of Huelva and the judicial district of La Palma del Condado, to the detriment of Seville, with which it had had intense economic and historical relations.
From its beginnings to the present, Chucena has been an eminently agricultural and somewhat livestock-based nucleus. Pascual Madoz, in the middle of the 19th century, will tell us: “grain production is very scarce; olive is the most abundant; there are some vineyards, cattle and very little sheep....”
Linked to the history of Chucena, we must remember the existence until 1988, when it had to be felled, of a large pine tree several centuries old, which was declared a Monument of Local Interest in 1954 and known as Father Jacinto's Pine. Its importance was such that it currently appears on the heraldic coat of arms of the town. A large cross was built from its wood.
You cannot miss the opportunity to visit our town. In this application you can make a virtual visit and learn more about everything that surrounds this town.
