Laujar was the residence of Boabdil after the fall of Granada, and also the place where Fernando de Válor, Aben Humeya, the Moorish leader of the 1568 rebellion, died. It preserves vestiges of its Nasrid past with remains of the citadel and historic fountains. The magnificent Church of the Incarnation, nicknamed the "Cathedral of the Alpujarra," is a Mudejar temple with Baroque interiors and paintings by Alonso Cano. Also noteworthy are the Convent of San Pascual Bailón (17th–18th centuries), currently in ruins, and the Baroque Hermitage of the Virgen de la Salud. The Moya House-Palace, home to the Spanish-Filipino Cultural Center, reflects the local connection with the poet Francisco Villaespesa.

Abundant water is a hallmark: the Andarax River is the source of the town's water, and the town has up to 16 fountains or pillars scattered throughout its streets, forming the popular "Ruta de los Pilares" (Route of the Pillars). 1 km from the town center is the Visitor Center, which explains the hydraulic and geological legacy of the area. This setting is ideal for active tourism: trails such as the Hidroeléctrica, Sulayr, and Monterrey Trails depart from nearby recreational areas. The town is known for its viticulture: it is part of the "Laujar-Alpujarra" Geographical Indication, which covers red, white, and rosé wines—produced on terraces on hillsides at almost 1,000 meters above sea level. The culinary offering includes traditional Alpujarra recipes such as migas (crumbs), gachas (porridge), choto al ajillo (choto al ajillo), fritá (fried sausages), and desserts such as roscos (breadcrumbs), mantecados (mantecados), and soplillos moriscos (Moorish puff pastries).
