Violating the strict moral norms that govern a deeply religious community supposes the immediate expulsion of the member who has consummated the crime. That is what happens to Hester Prynne, indicated by the Puritan society in which she lives having committed adultery in the absence of her husband. Obliged to live on the margins of her fellows and to raise her daughter born of sin alone, Hester tries to work her new life by demonstrating her independence and strength of character. A life to which her husband Roger Chillingworth and the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale are also inextricably linked, both consumed by dark and violent feelings.
