The Pedra das Guaritas geosite located in Caçapava do Sul, in the south central portion of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) presents a lush landscaping that makes it one of the most spectacular places in Rio Grande do Sul (PAIM, et al 2010 ), having been named after the ceremonial testimonies that served as a place of guard and ambush (watchtowers) during the Farroupilha Revolution in Rio Grande do Sul (1835-1845). Paim et al. (2010, p.237) highlight that the Guaritas comprise geomorphological features in the form of rugged hills consisting of sandstones and conglomerates, sculpted by erosive processes, which together define a ruiniform appearance for the area. This landscape is the result of differential erosion along fracture systems that facilitated and guided predominantly rainfall erosion and thus the development of the ruin aspect that can be observed on the map.
