Hasankeyf is located 37km away from the Batman City in Southeast Anatolia. It is established on the south slopes of the Raman Mountains and on the two side of the Tigris. It has thousands of caves which were carved into rocks, therefore, It Is also, called "the city of caves" or In Assyrian "Kefave" .In medieval time, Arabs also called it "Hisni Keyfa" which means rock castle. Historical sources suggest various names, such as "Cepha (Kefa) and "Hisn-i Keyfa", however It became "Hasankeyf" In the final times of Ottoman. It is unknown that the construction date and founders of the cave city. The cave paints, which are located In the Valley of Gunfe, Indicate that this area was formed around 900 BC. It was also used as a military base by Roman Empire because of its strategic location.\n\n Christian Assyrians Iived in the Hasankeyf until the beginning of Mediaeval Age.
