Nearly 32 thousand villages in Indonesia are located in state forest areas and 70 percent of the village community depend on the forest for their livelihood.
The role of the community in forest sustainability is so large that an integrated effort is needed to balance ecological, social and economic functions in an area.
To face this challenge, YKAN has taken a community-based approach called Action to Inspire Citizens for Change or SIGAP. SIGAP is an approach to involve the community in efforts to protect and save forests, by emphasizing the village's potential-based approach.
The main goal of SIGAP is to help strengthen village government governance, ensure access rights and sustainable resource management by the community, and develop sustainable livelihood strategies.
Around 31,957 villages in Indonesia are located in state forest areas and 70% of the village community depend on the forest for their livelihood.
