The horse is very important among the equine species because their contribution to human civilization has been commendable. In modern times, horses also do integral work in the Indian Army, the security forces, the police and various socio-cultural programs. There has been a considerable decrease in the number of Indian horses since 1952. Many horse breeds have reached the brink of extinction. There are six major breeds of horses in India such as Marwari, Kathiawadi, Spiti, Zanskari, Manipuri, and Bhutia. Apart from these, minor or non-descript breeds also exist in India.
