Many people change car insurance annually. The changeover season for motor vehicle insurance is traditionally in autumn, when the contracts are extended. However, a change of vehicle insurance is also possible all year round, provided certain factors apply.

Many German car insurance companies automatically renew your contract, so you have to cancel at least a month before you cancel your contract.

Does the car insurance apply to trips abroad?
The motor vehicle insurance can apply to trips abroad if you are traveling within the EU member states. You need to take out liability insurance as this insurance is compulsory in all EU countries. You can also take out additional insurance that covers other risks and damages, such as the other types of auto insurance, partially comprehensive or fully comprehensive insurance mentioned above.

If you want to drive outside the EU member states, you need a green card. You can request such a document from your car insurance company and are usually free of charge. In the green card you will find a list of the countries where your car insurance is still valid. Certain countries outside of the green card requirements require you to get car insurance at the border.
